Arun Young Musicians (AYM) | 18 March 2014

Mark Kendall, the current Chairman of Arun Young Musicians (AYM), gave us a talk that provided an update on what AYM is currently doing/planning plus a brief personal biography. Mark is self employed working as an agent for professional musicians, having study politics at Cambridge & then singing at the Northern College of Music in Manchester; how ever he decided after Manchester that he would not be able to make a good living out of being a professional singer.

As a result he set up his own agency for classical musicians, and in January attend a performance by one client at the Opera House in Nice where his client was performing in Die Fledermaus. He recently attend the Worthing Music Festival where his daughter & wife were performing & competing, but he found it quite noticeable that it was the same youngsters competing as in AYM; so where is the music education in West Sussex for young people – it seems to have disappeared from the curriculum.

In January AYM joined forces with the Horsham Performance Platform to stage a joint concert at Broadbridge Heath, Horsham; and the afternoon was a great success & very well supported even though the weather was appalling. AYM Committee are hoping to be able to work with other local music organisations to stage future concerts & events, so strengthening the number & quality of opportunities that they offer to the young musicians. We learnt that two of the AYM youngsters recently performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in town; and they are hoping to join in with the new Worthing Day event in June which will encompass drama, recitations as well as music. AYM is in good financial shape but would welcome members help in obtaining new sponsors plus our volunteer support on their event days.
